Bupropion (Wellbutrin)
An antidepressant that also helps with energy, focus, and quitting smoking. It does not usually cause weight gain or sexual side effects.
What It Is
Bupropion works on dopamine and norepinephrine rather than serotonin. That’s why it tends to be activating — it can boost energy and focus.
It treats depression and helps people stop smoking (sold as Zyban for that use).
How to Take It
Take in the morning (and early afternoon for twice-daily forms) — late doses can cause insomnia.
Take with or without food, but be consistent. Swallow XL/SR tablets whole; do not crush or chew.
Black Box Warning
As with all antidepressants, there is a small risk of increased suicidal thoughts in people under 25 early in treatment. Watch closely and call if mood worsens.
Common (Usually Mild) Side Effects
- Dry mouth, headache.
- Trouble sleeping — take earlier in the day.
- Feeling jittery, restless, or anxious.
- Nausea, mild tremor.
Serious — Call Us or Seek Care
- Seizures — rare but dose-related. Risk goes up with high doses, alcohol, or an eating disorder.
- Raised blood pressure.
- Severe agitation, confusion, or a “high”/racing mood.
- Allergic reaction: rash, hives, swelling.
Who Should Avoid It & Alcohol
Do not take if you have a seizure disorder or active/past bulimia or anorexia — these raise seizure risk.
Avoid alcohol, and never stop heavy drinking or benzodiazepines abruptly while on it — both can trigger seizures.
Monitoring
We may check your blood pressure during treatment.
No routine blood tests are needed.
