FDA Indication Search: Approved Drugs by Diagnosis
Type a psychiatric diagnosis to list the medications with an FDA-approved indication for it, grouped by indication, with phase, line and age range.
Runs free in your browser. Searches run on your device against the site's medication database.
What it does
The FDA Indication Search is a single search bar over the on-label FDA indications recorded in the PsychoPharmRef medication database. Type a diagnosis and the agents approved for it are listed, grouped by indication. Quick-pick chips cover common searches: Bipolar I, Bipolar II, acute mania, bipolar depression, bipolar maintenance, schizophrenia, MDD and OCD.
How to search
- Diagnoses and acronyms. Full names and common acronyms both work, including MDD, TRD, OCD, GAD, PTSD, SAD, PMDD, OSA and BED.
- Bipolar subtype and phase. Add a subtype or phase to narrow bipolar results: "Bipolar II", "acute mania", "bipolar depression" or "bipolar maintenance". Maintenance searches also match terms like prevention and prophylaxis.
- Other terms. For other searches, every word you type must appear in the indication, drug name, brand name or drug class.
Reading the results
A summary line gives the number of medications and indications matched. Within each indication, agents are sorted by FDA approval year where it is recorded. Each entry shows the generic and brand name, the approval year, and badges for the specific diagnosis or subtype (for example Bipolar I versus II), the line of therapy (monotherapy or adjunct), and the approved age range, where known. If nothing matches, the tool says no FDA-approved agent is on file for that search.
A "Copy list" button copies the grouped results as dated plain text, ready to paste into a note or teaching handout.
Limitations
The search covers on-label indications only. It is not a treatment guideline and does not reflect the large, legitimate role of evidence-based off-label prescribing. Results are only as complete as the indications recorded in the database. Confirm approval status, phase, line and age range against current prescribing information before clinical use.
