What the module teaches
Module 2 of the PsychoPharmRef therapy course is a practical how-to for behavioral interventions grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for autistic children, especially in early intervention. It covers the core procedures (discrete trial training, the naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions PRT and ESDM, and function-based support) and teaches them within an assent-based, neurodiversity-affirming frame. The module acknowledges ABA's contested history and the autistic community's concerns about older, compliance-driven approaches. It emphasizes functional, client-selected goals such as communication, self-help, safety and participation, and does not aim to suppress harmless behaviors such as stimming.
Learn tab topics
- Core behavioral principles: the ABC sequence, reinforcement, prompting, fading, shaping, chaining, generalization and maintenance
- Assessment before teaching: preference assessment, baseline probes, functional behavior assessment and developmental checklists
- Discrete trial training step by step, including prompt hierarchies, errorless learning, trial-by-trial data and a predefined mastery criterion
- Pivotal Response Training and the Early Start Denver Model
- Functional communication training, visual supports and activity schedules, and social skills teaching
- Dosage and caregiver coaching, common problems (escape-maintained behavior, prompt dependence, fidelity), and assent-based practice
Interactive worksheets
Five practice tabs follow the Learn tab, and each can copy its contents as dated plain text:
| Tab | What you build |
|---|---|
| Assess | Preference assessment, baseline skill probes and ABC data |
| DTT | A discrete trial program with a live trial-by-trial data grid |
| Naturalistic (PRT/ESDM) | Pivotal-area targets with natural reinforcers, and learning opportunities embedded in routines |
| Behavior Plan (FBA) | A function-based support plan: hypothesized function, prevention strategies, FCT replacement behavior and consequences |
| Goals and Progress | A SMART skill goal and a session-by-session percent-independent tracker |
A print button saves the whole module as a PDF, and a separate PDF of blank fill-by-hand worksheets can be downloaded from the module header.
Who it is for
The module is a teaching resource for supervised skill development by clinicians, trainees and others learning these methods. The worksheets are practice aids, not validated instruments. ABA-based intervention should be planned and supervised by a qualified behavior analyst, with the learner's assent and wellbeing kept central. Key references include Cooper, Heron and Heward's Applied Behavior Analysis (3rd ed., 2020) and Rogers and Dawson's Early Start Denver Model (2010).
